EAST LANSING, Mich. – East Lansing’s alternative art space, (SCENE) Metrospace announces a call to artists for an upcoming exhibit of fiber-based art. All artists over the age of 18 are invited to participate. Applications will be accepted through Friday, November 10.
Fiber, fabric, and textiles of all sorts have an ancient and resonant history intrinsically tied to apparel, shelter, modesty, and commerce. In recent decades, fiber as an artform has embraced social issues, formal aesthetic concerns, and critical examinations of its own traditions. Artworks are sought for the exhibit “Connective Fibers” which explore the uses of fiber as an art medium, or which use the materials and techniques of ancient or modern textiles in new and unique ways. Artworks incorporating any other medium, including but not restricted to drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, sound, video, or performance will be considered — however fiber must be an integral component of all submissions. An emphasis on non-utilitarian artworks will characterize the show, which will open with a public reception Friday, December 1, 2006 and run through Sunday, January 7, 2007.
To apply, artists must submit images or documentation representative of the work to be exhibited, a description of your project idea, an artistic statement and a resume. Artists must also include an SASE for the return of their materials. There is no entrance fee. Please send your information to: (SCENE) Metrospace, C/O Peter Richards, Coordinator, 410 Abbott Road, East Lansing, MI 48823. Application deadline is November 10, 2006, and early submissions are encouraged.
(SCENE) Metrospace is located at 303 Abbott Road, at the Albert Street intersection and is open Wednesday through Friday afternoons from 1-4 p.m., Friday evenings from 6-9 p.m., Saturdays from 6-9 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. during scheduled exhibits. For more information, please contact Peter Richards at (517) 319-6832.
