I can’t believe it’s May and I can’t believe that Maker Faire Detroit is just a few months away! Handmade Detroit is so excited to join the gang over at The Henry Ford year three of Maker Faire in Detroit with Craft Faire. Applications will be going live next week, but here are a few snippets to hold you over until then:
You’ll find Handmade Detroit inside the museum again this year taking up residence in the aviation gallery with some other talented folks! If you’re interested in volunteering with Maker Faire or possibly giving a talk or leading a demo, make sure to leave a comment and let us know.
Have any questions? Make sure to visit the next community meeting at i3 Detroit next week or stop by Craft Revival on May 12 to ask us in person.
We are always so excited to share our vendors for one of our upcoming shows. This year is no exception!

From FIGMENT:
On July 21-22 2012 – FIGMENT returns to Detroit’s Belle Isle after a successful inaugural year. This year, festival attendees will experience twice the interaction, as a landmark second day has been added. All are welcome, as each participant contributes to the overall experience. FIGMENT continues its mission of offering free and participatory art to all; destroying the barriers of museum walls and costly entrance fees and redefining the lines between artist and audience. To realize this goal, FIGMENT encourages artists to push themselves beyond their limits. FIGMENT is currently seeking submissions in all forms of media. Works that encourage audience participation and interactivity are highly encouraged.
What is FIGMENT?
It’s 100% free, volunteer run, interactive and experimental Arts Event. It
started in NYC in 07 and now has spread to Boston, Jackson and Detroit!
So what are YOU bringing? FIGMENT is an event for community, our community, all communities. It’s what WE Make It! Come and play with us!
Whimsy is a new handmade boutique in Royal Oak, featuring lots of local artists, crafters and talent! Located in the K&S Mall at 14 mile and Crooks, this cute little shop has great gifts for just about anyone, and also offers classes so you can learn to make some new crafts yourself. I stopped into Whimsy last week and was happy to see some of my favorite local artists inside, as well as a number of makers I’d never seen before and loved. I had a great time shopping and left with a great little gift for an Easter basket (and a little gift for myself, too).
Check out all their artists and classes available online at http://whimsyroyaloak.com, and some pictures from my visit in this Flickr set!

Being a newish Mom I’m constantly encountered with where to take my daughter to eat! A sit down place with a two year old? Ugh… More often we end up at the market finding something to take home instead of braving a restaurant.
Beep beep - here comes the food trucks! Aaaah, a Mothers rescue! And so much more. These restaurants on wheels are part of the pop up craze - staking a place at local events, street corners and neighborhoods with themes for their menus ranging from hot dogs, tacos, something for health nuts, and good ol’ comfort food.
Summer has sprung in Michigan suddenly and I can’t think of a better event to enjoy the weather than visiting Rust Belt Market this Wednesday, March 21st for Metro Detroit Street Eats!
Loads of restaurants on wheels will pack the Withington Parking Lot behind the market, the event will feature Ferndale’s own Treat Dreams as well as other mobile eateries like Jacques Tacos and Chow Catering (who wowed our DUCF audiences with their delicious foods).
Chris Best, owner of Rust Belt Market sees it as a fun, new thing and proof of Michiganders getting creative in this economy. “If you lose your job or your spouse loses their job you are forced to figure something out. What better time to dust off that old restaurant dream and flex your mad skills as a chef. “
The event runs from 4-9pm with seating, live entertainment and cool stuff to see and purchase at Rust Belt. I can’t wait to sit on a curb with my little gal and split a Mac & Cheese!
Friendly reminder - applications for this year’s Craft Revival close this Sunday, March 18th at 11:59 pm! Submit your app here, and check out our FAQ for all sorts of tips on applying, too.
