A Heart A Day

February is here, yippee! I love Valentine’s Day, I love red things, I love hearts… happy sigh. Well. This month I will be making and posting a heart something (with how-to steps) every day as a way to celebrate both Valentine’s Day and Go Red for Women month. I have high blood pressure, so I’ve been very active in encouraging my friends to get checked out by their doctors and treat their ticker proper!

You’ll get two projects today as yesterday was a busy news day here at HandmadeDetroit.com (think Granholm).

First, a quick project:

Smelly Techy Sachets

  1. Iron your fabric of choice (I’m thinking something red) and trace a heart (per your favorite size) on the wrong side of the fabric. To save time, double up the wrong sides so you can cut out two hearts at once.
  2. Using some sharp pinking shears, cut out your hearts.
  3. You can either hand stitch or machine stitch these bad boys. I went for machine to save time. Put the wrong sides together and sew around the edge, leaving a hole for the stuffing. We’ve pinked the fabric so it won’t fray since we’re not turning them inside out.
  4. Fill the heart pouch with a smelly something of your choice. I found economy packs of potpouri at Joann Fabrics for $4.99. “Clean Linen” is my smelly scent.
  5. To make a nice closure, pin the opening closed and sew shut.
  6. With a puffy paint color of your choice, and a steady hand, write out some of your favorite techy phrases, such as the classic “LOL.”
  7. Let the paint dry.
  8. Smell.
  9. Give away or put in your sock drawer.

And then:

Squishy Heart Pillows

1. Trace a heart on the fold of a piece of paper. I used some junk mail!

2.  Trace your heart on the wrong side of the fabric. Again, to save time, double up the fabric to cut two at once.

3. Using pinking shears, cut the fabric.

4. Place the wrong sides together and sew around the edge, leaving about a 1/2 inch seam. Leave a spot for the polyfil.

5. Fill with polyfil! Sew up the hole!

6. Hug your squishy heart.

Check back daily for a new heart something!
