Crafty holidays in the New York Times

The NYTimes has an interesting story today about how craft sales are actually benefitting from the recession. “For Craft Sales, Recession is a help” touches on the sales reports¬†of giant craft supply stores like Michaels and Joann’s Fabrics, as well as those from Etsy. The article says many people are creating their gifts as a cost-effective alternative. Was that a factor in your making this season? Or do you disagree with the sentiment: If a sweater from China costs $20 at Forever 21, is it actually cheaper to make it yourself?
